Today's Kichen Tip: How to add interest to scones or cookies with special sugar

Did you ever eat a sugar cookie or scone with a crunchy sugar coating?  If you have, you will know that it adds much more interest and flavor than regular granulated sugar.

I like to use sanding sugar.  Sanding sugar (which may be called by other names) is a large granule sugar as shown in the bowl.  See how large and sparkly they are.  They add a beautiful look, texture and sparkle to your baked goods.

They come in many colors and are perfect for turning plain Jane cookies and other baked goods into works of art.

Sanding sugar is available at craft stores such as Michaels as well as gourmet cooking stores.  I prefer to buy it at ABC Cake Decorating which is in Phoenix.  I can buy a huge tub for less than I pay for the small bottle shown.

I also like to have several colors on hand so that I always have what I need.  If you only want one color, this white/clear option is probably the best.  You'll be glad you have it in your arsenal.

I'll put out a new tip each day.
