Today's Kitchen Tip: Phyllo shells make a simple party appetizer

They change the box occasionally.
This is the look for 2013.
Holiday time is quickly coming and we tend to entertain more than ever during this time.  If you want some easy ideas for making appetizers, you  may want to try using phyllo (aslo spelled fillo or filo) cups.  They come premade, usually in packages of 15.  They can be used for savory items such as the one shown below, or for filling with dessert-type items.

Some stores carry them year-round.  If that's the case, they are usually found in the freezer section by phyllo dough and puff pastry.

Many stores just carry them around the holidays.  If that is the case, they are usually not in the freezer.  You  may have to ask someone at the store where to find them.  I have seen them on endcaps, in the cookie area, by the holiday baking area....they can be anywhere.  You may spend a few minutes locating them in the store, but they will save you loads of time when putting your appetizers together.

The appetizer we show here is a little cream cheese piped in, with a bit of cocktail sauce, a mini shrimp and a sprig of dill.  It takes about 5 minutes to make all of these and it does not take any effort at all.

I am a former information technology girl who left the business and opened up a cooking school. Cooking and entertaining are my passions and I love to share this passion with others. I am currently on hiatus from teaching classes, but hope to begin offering them soon. In the meantime, enjoy the tips. Students always told me how much they loved the tips and now you can, too. I'll put out a new tip each day.
